On average, in 2018, a fire department responded to a fire every 24 seconds in the United States, according to the National Fire Protection Association. A structure fire occurred every 63 seconds, a home fire occurred every 87 seconds, and an outside property fire occurred every 52 seconds.

While there are many different reasons for a fire to occur, there are some that are more common than others. According to FEMA, in 2018 50.7% of fires were caused by cooking, 9.4% by heating, 7.5% by carelessness, and 6.8% by electrical malfunction. Cooking – Fires in the kitchen make up almost half of household fires! During dinner time (5pm-8pm) is when most fires occur. Additionally, The National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) says Thanksgiving Day is the peak day for home cooking fires, followed by the day before Thanksgiving and Christmas Day.

In 2017, U.S. fire departments responded to about 1,600 cooking fires on Thanksgiving. Fires are easily started by burners being left on, food left unattended on the stove or oven, flammable items left near a burner (towels, packaging), grease, and more

Heating – Space heaters, baseboard heating, and kerosene heaters are commonly known to cause fires within a home. If any of these heating elements have items too close could cause the fibers to ignite. When using any of these heating elements, remember to never leave them unattended, keep them away for anything flammable, and to be sure they are properly ventilated.

Electrical Wiring or Equipment – Be aware of any wires that may be frayed or singed looking when using appliances. If you have several things plugged into an outlet, and you notice dimming of light or reduction of power with something you are using, there may be faulty wiring. Faulty wiring can cause a spark at any given time and cause serious fire damage.

If you are not using an item, unplug it. Any items that require to be turned on, make sure to turn them off and don’t leave items unattended. It is important to have a certified electrician inspect your home wiring if you have any concerns, don’t try to fix it on your own.

Accidental – Accidents happen, and they are a leading cause for fires. Careless smoking is a huge factor. Smoking in bed should never be done as the cigarette may fall onto a floor or in the bed causing it to catch on fire. Cigarettes that are not snuffed out fully could cause the ashtray to catch fire as well.

Always be sure to that cigarettes are completely out, and not to let the ashtray build up with butts. Additionally, keep matches and lighters out of reach of children. Kids can be curious and accidentally start fire to anything.

Candles and Open Flames – Candles are common in most homes for decoration and wonderful scents! But they are a leading cause of household fires. If the wicks are too long, the flame will burn higher and more erratically. This can cause the flame to move beyond the candle to other items nearby like a curtain, wall hanging or other items.

Candles should never be left unattended. If you are leaving a room or going to bed, be sure the candle is fully out (no ember is remaining on the wick) Fireplaces are also a common cause to fires. Built too high, or not tended to can cause hot coals or embers to come out of the fireplace onto carpets or other items. Be sure to tend your fire and keep your chimney free and clear of any soot build-up. Chimney inspections should occur yearly before you start using it again for the season.

Chemicals or Flammable Liquids -Any liquids that are flammable near a heat source can cause a fire. Laundry detergent in the right environment can combust causing fire damage. Other chemicals and liquids under the right circumstances could have the same impact. Be sure to keep flammable liquids away from open flames and heat sources. It is also important to have them stored properly and in their proper containers.

Christmas Trees – Faulty wiring, or shorts in the lights used on Christmas trees have been reported as a major cause of fires at home during the holiday season. From 2011-2015, over 200 fires were reported in the U.S due to a Christmas tree. Be sure to keep them watered, keep them away from sources of heat, and turn out the lights if you are not home or in bed. Also, check your lights before stringing them on the tree to be sure they do not flicker (if they aren’t supposed to) and be sure the wiring is intact.

Outdoor Cooking – Outdoor grills if they are too close to a house or building could cause a fire. There are times that the flame on a grill may get exceedingly high, specially when cooking something greasy. These flames could easily ignite anything flammable. Keep utensils away as well as towels or other food packaging. It is best to have a grill in a large open space away from any building or brush. Always remember to turn off the flame and gas!

Lint Build up inside a dryer – Dryers have a high heat source, and lint build up could be a source of combustion. The heating element in a dryer could heat up enough to cause a spark in the lint trap. This may go un-noticed until it is too late. You should never run your dryer when you are not home, of if you are planning to go to bed. Always clean your lint trap after every use and throw it away.

Fireworks – Even though they may be beautiful, they can sure cause a lot of damage if not used properly. Each year, over 18,000 fires are started due to fireworks in the U.S. Not only can they cause a fire, they can also cause serious damage to individuals. In 2017 alone, over 12,000 fireworks related injuries were documented.

To start off, what is soot? Soot is the black powdery substance left behind when organic matter has not been completely burned. You can see soot when burning a candle sometimes. It usually occurs if the flame is too high.

When a larger fire occurs, corrosive substances are left behind when smoke interacts with the surrounding areas. In the event of a larger fire, you can see the soot that is left behind on items, walls, flooring and appliances. The black soot that is left, along with the smoke can cause harmful effects on health if not properly remediated.

Smoke from a fire can contain several materials and chemicals. The main make-up of smoke includes carbon monoxide, carbon dioxide, and particulates (microscopic material that was burned). Some chemicals that are commonly found within smoke include aldehydes, acidic gases, oxides, dioxins, and metals.
