FAQs and Water Damage Tips
Classes and
Categories of Water
CLASS 1 DAMAGE - Very little damage has been caused and will be the easiest for water cleanup.
CLASS 2 DAMAGE - Water evaporates quickly leaving moisture in materials like cushions and carpets. Water restoration becomes more difficult.
CLASS 3 DAMAGE - Water evaporates the quickest and leaves moisture in walls and furniture making it even more difficult for water damage repair.
CLASS 4 DAMAGE - The water damage has likely affected the structure (plaster, flooring, concrete foundation). Damage in this manner requires a licensed Water Damage Restoration Company for effective water mitigation
Category 1 – Clean (White) Water – This water is what comes out of the faucet or stormwater (rain or hail). This water is clean and not contaminated, making it least hazardous to humans. Think of if a bathtub overflowed, this would be clean water.
Category 2 – Gray Water – This water is going to be contaminated of some sort and will contain microorganisms. This water is not clean and can make someone sick if ingested. Think of the water that comes out of the sump pump, broken toilets, and drained water from appliances or sinks.
Category 3 – Black Water – This kind of water can be considered a biohazard and will be very harmful if ingested. Bacteria and other organisms thrive in black water, usually caused by sewage and stagnant standing water.
Preventing Future

After dealing with all the water in your kitchen, or basement…there are things you can do to prevent the need for future water cleanup services.
- Disconnect hoses that aren’t in use
- Keep your gutters and downspouts clean
- Maintain regular home maintenance (check roof and appliances regularly)
- Install water detection devices (around the sump pump, water heater, and washer)
- Get a backup generator to use for the sump pump when the power goes out
- Don’t use harsh chemicals in old plumbing systems
